Course summary

This PhD offers you the opportunity to develop your translation studies research in a highly regarded department. Current research strengths include;

  • translation of literary and philosophical texts
  • translation between Asian (especially Chinese) and Western contexts
We offer supervision of projects involving English and;

You may choose whether you submit a thesis or a combined extended translation and thesis. The University of Nottingham is one of eight universities making up the AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C). The partnership provides funding and training to support the professional and personal development of the next generation of arts and humanities doctoral researchers.

Modules

Assessment may be either through submission of a thesis (which should be not more than 100,000 for the case of PhD or 60,000 words in the case of MPhil), or through a combined extended translation and thesis option. The extended translation may be of material belonging to any genre, subject to prior approval. The accompanying thesis must engage with, and contribute to the development of, translation theory.


Entry requirements

2:1 (or international equivalent). We would usually expect you to hold, or be working towards, a masters degree in a relevant subject
