Course summary
The foundation course will support students to gain the skills and knowledge to prepare for degree level study. Modules are delivered by a team of expert lecturers with extensive professional experience in working with children and young people, education and early years. You will be taught through a variety of hands-on and engaging lectures, seminars, creative and practical workshops. If you do not meet the entrance requirements for the Children and Young People Foundation degree you should consider the foundation course option. Applicants who successfully pass the foundation year will automatically progress to the 2-year Foundation degree programme.
Modules
Semester 1 Academic and Professional Development This module aims to develop academic study skills and introduces the key concepts, theories and practices of HE study. Introduction to Child Development This module aims to develop an awareness and understanding of how children learn and develop. Students will explore theoretical approaches to learning and development and identify factors affecting this. Introduction to Safeguarding This module aims to raise awareness of current legislation, policies and procedures which exists to promote children rights and keep them safe from harm. Semester 2 Play This module raises an awareness and understanding of the role of play in children’s learning and development. Students will explore different types and stages of play. Project Study The module allows students to choose a topic of interest relating to children, families and education. Student will complete an independent research project, with support from academic lecturers.
Assessment method
The Children and Young People foundation year uses a variety of assessments methods designed to assess student’s knowledge and understanding of module teaching and provide students with sector related skills and competencies.
