Course summary
Are you interested in how psychology shapes children’s learning and development? Do you want to make a positive contribution to children’s lives? On this course, you will study specialist modules in child and educational psychology alongside the core psychology curriculum - developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, individual differences and research skills. Throughout the degree we’ll help you to develop your critical and analytical skills by exploring the theory-practice relationship. You’ll also complete professional work placements during your degree, and have the opportunity to apply your knowledge, understanding and skills in child-centred organisations. The first year of the course introduces you to the core areas of psychology: biological, cognitive, developmental, social and individual differences. You’ll also learn about a range of research methods used within psychology to gain insight into human behaviour. In addition, you will be introduced to the science and practice of child and educational psychology. In your second year you’ll focus on psychological theories of learning which aim to empower the child and young person, giving them greater agency in their development. In the final year, you will develop your knowledge of child and educational psychology through an applied lens, exploring a range of learning needs and difficulties experienced by children and young adults. Professional work placements Students have worked in diverse roles, such as supporting teachers in a pupil referral unit, to educational attainment for young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. You could also support children and young people in nurseries, schools, further education, charity and research settings. Graduate opportunities This degree can lead to a range of careers in child and educational psychology, clinical psychology, teaching and counselling. You’ll also be prepared for child-centred roles in the public and private sectors, including social and education research, community projects and charities. Graduates also go on to postgraduate study in any area of psychology.
