Course summary

The MSc in Sport Coaching positions sport coaching as a political, pedagogical, and sociocultural endeavour. Its aim is to produce reflexive and ethical sports coaching scholars who critically position themselves in historically and culturally constituted coaching discourses and practices. In doing so, the MSc in Sport Coaching provides a unique opportunity for the development of imaginative action and thinking to support personal and professional progression. Our programme is based upon contemporary leading-edge research knowledge, and mainly taught by research-active academic staff with relevant coaching experience. The curriculum emphasis on a sociocultural and pedagogic approach to sports coaching is consistent with staff expertise, which has been commended by both external advisers and students.

Core modules: • Deconstructing Sports Coaching Practice through Theory • Reconstructing Sports Coaching Practice through Theory • Managing Coaching Problems • Understanding the Micro-political Landscape in sport • Research Methods for Sport • Dissertation Project (12000 words written equivalent) One Option Module chosen from: • Critical Study of Sport Coaching • Sustainable Practice in Sport and Physical Culture • Social Issues and Sporting Legacies • Independent Study

Assessment method

All module assessment is based on 5,000 word assignments or equivalent. Presentations are also assessed in some of the core and optional modules.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

An honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) in a related subject area together with appropriate teaching/coaching experience. Non-graduates whose lack of formal qualifications is compensated for by their age and relevant coaching experience will also be considered. International Applicants: Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.5 standard or equivalent.
