Course summary

This BA (Hons) Musical Theatre and Acting for Film course offers training in musical theatre dance, singing, and stage and screen acting from your first year. You will develop specialist practical skills in the contexts of both stage and screen acting which will enhance your flexibility as a practitioner in the industry. Throughout your study, you will be offered the opportunity to engage with on-site and off-site performance experiences. These might range from smaller scale to larger scale productions and will enable you to have insight into the requirements of the industry. Students on our Acting for Film Provision are also eligible for Spotlight UK membership, which offers a variety of industry-specific benefits to support students to successfully access the industry, such as discounted graduate membership, representation by Spotlight (searchable by casting directors and agents in a dedicated ‘Spotlight Graduates’ section), invitation to participate in events programme with exclusive priority booking, access to the dedicated one to one career advice sessions and Spotlight monthly tailored newsletters.

Modules

Year One Your first year introduces you to the fundamentals of acting, dancing and singing, and begin to expand your knowledge and skills in music grammar, as well as specific examinations of British and American musical theatre styles. Year Two In your second year, you will explore the history of musical theatre performance from its origins through to the modern day, alongside your continued musical theatre development. You will also study wider aspects of the industry itself that will prepare you for your future career, including professional resilience and an examination of the business side of musical theatre production. Year Three Your third year acts as the culmination of your training throughout your degree, as you plan, rehearse, and perform multiple productions. You will also take part in swing projects, where you will learn multiple parts of a production that helps prepare you for your career within the industry.

Qualification requirements

Candidates will be required to demonstrate, in a performance audition, ability in dance, acting and singing. Applicants with high levels of performance skills may be considered for a lower academic offer.

Additional entry requirements

Audition

Audition content Dance: You will be taught some technical exercises in the centre, some corner work and a musical theatre routine. You will also demonstrate a short tap routine (optional) and will need to demonstrate some ballet technique, (compulsory). Please bring appropriate clothing and jazz and tap shoes, (if you have them). Singing: Please prepare two contrasting songs from the musical theatre canon. You will be asked to choose one to start with and if required you may be asked to sing some of the second. The numbers will need to be cut to roughly 1.5 minutes (90 seconds). Please bring the music for the accompanist, correctly prepared and strictly no acapella or backing tracks. Acting: Please prepare one short monologue that relates to you as an actor and that you feel appropriate to the Musical Theatre art form. It should last no more than 2 minutes.
