Civil engineers play a vital role in creating a sustainable, inclusive and safe environment, tackling critical issues such as the climate emergency facing our society today. They are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of our infrastructure – from buildings, bridges, tunnels and transport systems to energy production and distribution, coastal defences and water management. Civil engineers also have a key responsibility for the preservation of the natural environment. If you dream of an exciting career that will contribute to a better future for the generations to come, Civil Engineering is for you. This degree will provide you with a solid background in the design and analysis of civil engineering structures. You will gain engineering skills of critical importance when working in industry, including the ability to break a complex engineering problem down into its component parts, to sketch and model engineering solutions and to be able to understand and prepare technical reports. As you progress, your developing analytical abilities will combine with hands-on experience of state-of-the-art equipment, establishing skills which are vital to securing employment in the civil engineering industry. Studying a modern degree with close connections to the rapidly evolving industry, you will learn about current design practices and the latest engineering standards. We will nurture your computer modelling skills by encouraging you to develop your own software to analyse real world civil engineering problems. Our programmes benefit from state-of-the-art laboratory and computing facilities, with a wide range of testing equipment for concrete, structures, soils and fluids and access to the latest software packages of relevance to industry. In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Introduction to Civil Engineering Materials, Engineering for People Hackathon, Introduction to Transportation Engineering, Surveying and Introductory Highways Design, Applied Mechanics (Civil). In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: AI, Machine Learning and Data Analysis, Geomechanics, Research Project Preparation, Civil Engineering Management. In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Finite Elements for Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering Design Practice & Management, Individual Engineering Project, Hydrology and Unsteady Flow, Coastal processes and engineering.

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year. If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.
