Course summary

A Foundation Degree that will allow students to combine academic study with employment or prepare for employment through work-related applications of their learning in Digital and Technology Solutions Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) have been approved as meeting occupational standards for the relevant sector. Our FdSc Digital and Technology Solutions degree has been aligned with the occupational standard for Software Developer and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). As a Digital and Technology Solutions graduate, you will have the option of progressing into careers such as a cyber security analyst, data or systems analyst or engineer, IT consultant or technician, network or software engineer or web developer. Digital technologies are now a fundamental part of all sectors of commerce and industry. Underpinning this is the continual need to design and develop technological solutions to a broad range of ever-evolving problems. This encompasses a range of digital and communications-based solutions centred on the acquisition, storage, manipulation, retrieval and dissemination of data. Every learner will have the opportunity to develop:

  • Web design and development skills in HTML, CSS and client-side scripting;
  • Systems analysis skills;
  • Database design and development skills within Microsoft Access and MYSQL/PHPMYDMIN;
  • Use of virtualisation technologies;
  • Network design and development skills – both local and business scale networks;
  • Network security and basic cybersecurity skills in protecting a business-scale network;
  • Server-side programming skills for e-commerce development.

This course will equip you with the skills you need to design and develop technological solutions to a broad range of ever-evolving problems. This includes the ability to manage and maintain large sets of data, as well as the application of advanced data analytics, which rely on the application of artificial intelligence, and the fundamental digital skills required by employers in 2025 and beyond. University Centre Grimsby offers state-of-the-art workspaces, which are equipped with all of the latest technology, preparing you for a future in the digital industry. This course is designed to give you a tailor-made, modern qualification, which covers a range of skills and technologies to help you achieve your dream career or progress in your current employment. To achieve the HTQ status, both level 4 and level 5 pathways must be completed.

Qualification requirements

The Institute will also encourage applications from non-traditional learners who lack formal academic qualifications. All such non-traditional applicants will be interviewed, set an appropriate piece of work (a research based written assignment investigating a current topic within the digital technologies sector), asked to provide evidence of relevant digital product development and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.
