Course summary

This online programme gives you the expertise to lead strategic planning and combat major oral health issues in your setting. You’ll gain the skills needed to face today’s dental healthcare challenges, learning how to make evidence-informed decisions and demonstrate strong public health leadership.

This online learning programme focuses on how we can combat the global health issues and challenges facing dental healthcare today, using strategic planning, evidence-informed decision-making and strong public health leadership. You’ll discover how dental policy decisions are made and implemented, how to design a research study that can address issues in your healthcare setting, and what makes an effective leader. You’ll take eight compulsory modules from the Postgraduate Diploma course and choose a specialist MSc module to gain advanced skills. You’ll also complete a dissertation, based on your research interests, in your second year. You’ll be studying at an internationally respected institution: we’re the UK’s top-rated dental school for research impact (REF 2014). We have some of the most modern facilities in the UK: the Institute of Dentistry moved to new premises in The Royal London Hospital in 2014 – the first UK dental school to be built in 40 years. MSc students can also attend an optional two-week summer placement in the Institute of Dentistry, as part of the non-credit bearing module Leadership and Planning in Health and Public Services. For this module, you’ll also complete an e-portfolio to record your leadership development.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Dental Public Health, Policy and Leadership certificate, you will need: A recognised undergraduate degree at the level of 2:1 or higher or international equivalent Degree disciplines such as Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, health sciences, oral Health Sciences, Public Health or social sciences will be considered. We acknowledge professional practice gained from a wide variety of relevant backgrounds. An IELTS score of 6.5 including 6.5 in all four components or equivalent if your first language is not English Applicants must be able to demonstrate a credible commitment to Dental Public Health Applicants who are considered potentially eligible for the course, may be invited to take part in a telephone or VOIP (e.g. Skype) interview before an offer is made.

All applicants to Queen Mary must show they meet a minimum academic English language standard for admission and to be successful on the course.
