Course summary

Learn about life at all levels, from molecules and cells to whole organisms. On this three-year Biology degree you'll explore topics looking at species, communities, and entire ecosystems to prime yourself for a broad choice of potential careers. You'll be taught by expert staff who are actively engaged in high-profile research, have the flexibility to tailor your degree through our extensive range of modules, and will be based in our state-of-the-art, multi-million pound Life Sciences building that houses plant growth, tissue culture, and invertebrate facilities. You'll gain extensive practical experience from a variety of field trips in the UK, Belize and Spain, can benefit from the close links we have with the nearby Marwell Wildlife organisation, can spend a semester studying at a university in Europe or Australasia, and can select a year in employment if you wish to gain experience in an industry setting. We'll also help you kick-start your career* in a variety of sectors including medicine, biotechnology, conservation, and the environment. *95% of Biological Sciences graduates were in employment or further study 15 months after graduation (Graduate Outcomes 2021/2022).

Assessment method

You'll learn, and be assessed, through a range of methods designed to equip you with the skills you need for success after graduating. The learning activities include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning. The assessment methods include coursework, laboratory reports and essays, individual and group projects, oral presentations, written and practical exams.

Qualification requirements

GCSEs: The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales).
