Law and French Law at Aberdeen gives you all the benefits of our trademark breadth, depth, choice and quality at Aberdeen Law School – ranked 5th out of 90 in the UK and with 93% student satisfaction. You will have the added advantage of studying the French legal system and spending a year of this 5-year course abroad. Law at Aberdeen looks at the historical, social, political and economic forces that influence our legal systems and govern our societies. You will learn to think like a lawyer rather than just 'learn' law. A major factor in our quality is the calibre and enthusiasm of our staff, testing your mental agility with complex, realistic legal scenarios as you get to grips with criminal, public and private law, legal systems, contracts, human rights and explore family law, the law of property and legal aspects of the EU. You will also have lots of opportunity to hone your developing legal skills in student-led initiatives such as mock legal debating, our highly active Law Society, the students’ journal in which your work may be published and our community law clinic – the Aberdeen Law Project. As with all our combined programmes, you will gain a thorough grounding in Scots Law to gain the LLB, adding the advantage of the study of law in France, with courses in French language throughout your studies and the whole of your third year in France studying for the Diploma in French Law in Grenoble, Lyon or Clermont Ferrand or the Certificate in Legal Studies from the universities of Reims or Strasbourg University. French at Aberdeen gained the highest possible rating of ‘Excellent’ in the last national Scottish Teaching Quality Assessment. Should you choose to practise law, there is a wide variety of career options within the law itself. However more than a third of Aberdeen law graduates now choose to use their law degree as a passport for entry into a wide range of careers including business - for which you will be an excellent candidate - media, finance and banking, teaching, governmental bodies and departments and the police force. Students wishing to transfer from another University, into the LLB degree at Aberdeen must submit an application to UCAS by the equal consideration deadline date. The University of Aberdeen will only consider transfer requests into year 1 or year 2 of the LLB. Students cannot transfer into the 2-year LLB Accelerated degree. Graduates wishing to apply for an LLB must apply for the 2-year LLB Accelerated degree – Law Accelerated (M115) or Law with English Law Accelerated (M116). Tuition fees for the Accelerated programmes are at a separate rate. In the event that a Graduate undertakes a 4-year or 5-year LLB degree, please note that tuition fees are charged each year of study at the same rate as those set for the Accelerated programme.

Assessment method
The use of various forms of assessment and learning environments facilitates the development of generic transferable skills enhancing student employability. Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

International applicants
In addition to tuition fees, students will require money to cover their living costs including accommodation, food, books, entertainment, clothing, phone bills, local travel, and laundry. These expenses will vary depending on your lifestyle and spending habits. In keeping with UKVI rules, we recommend that student’s budget £1,136 per month to cover their living costs and you have to evidence 9 months’ worth of maintenance (£10,224) when applying for your visa. You also have to pay the NHS health surcharge of £776 per each year of study, when applying for a visa. When you apply for your Student Visa, you will be required to evidence these funds in your personal bank account (or a parent’s personal bank account (NOT a Business Account). Therefore, you will have to evidence your 1st years tuition fees (minus the International Scholarship for self-paying students) and the maintenance amount of £10,224. These funds have to have been in your account for a minimum of 28-consecutive days immediately prior to applying for your visa. If the amount in your account drops below the required amount, the 28-day period starts over. International students who will be studying for more than 6 months are permitted to work for 20 hours per week during term-time, though this may be increased during the holiday periods. Please note this must not be relied upon as a means to fund your studies, as you have to evidence your funding when applying for your Student Visa.
