Course summary

Around the world, health and social care services are coming together to prioritise the support that individuals, families and their communities need. The level of practice needed to inform and contribute meaningfully to this global movement is being realised. As a result, advanced practice masters level qualifications for registered health and social care practitioners are in demand. Glasgow Caledonian University is recognised as an institution committed to transforming lives through education and innovating for social and economic impact. The University's master's in Advanced Practice has been designed in consultation with policy advisors, clinicians, students and patient representatives. We recognise the importance of service user and carer perspectives when it comes to defining a flexible approach to practice experience and in advancing core and area-specific levels of clinical competence. MSc Advanced Practice at Glasgow Caledonian University gives you exposure to worldwide health and social care perspectives. You will explore further the need to integrate service users and carers views into policy and practice development. And you will develop the confidence to embrace and promote professional leadership. The Advanced Practice programme also offer four bespoke pathways: MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Musculoskeletal Health MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Diabetes Care MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Travel Medicine MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine Note: for candidates considering MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Travel Medicine and MSc Advanced Practice pathway in Wilderness and Expedition Medicine pathways, please note that applicants must have completed The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine or Expedition and Wilderness Medicine to be eligible to apply to these pathway within the MSc Advanced Practice course. The qualification includes a 60-credit dissertation module at GCU, completed over two trimesters in a six-month period and, in combination with the RCPSG Diploma. This new route to the master's-level qualification combines practical learning and academic rigour, allowing students the opportunity to demonstrate professionalism and ultimately protect patient safety in a unique area of clinical expertise. Recognition of Prior Learning through experiential or accredited learning can also contribute to gaining this award.

Assessment method

This is a modular programme, each module being individually assessed; a variety of assessment strategies are used within modules, including: reports; projects; literature reviews and essays; a supervised research dissertation is submitted as the final assessment.


Entry requirements

You must be a registered health or social care practitioner with minimum academic requirement; UK 2:2 honours degree or equivalent. If you can demonstrate experience or accredited learning you will also be considered by submitting a Recognition of Prior Learning Application. Academic IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) with no element below 6.0.
