Get ready to step on set and become a master of transformation with our dynamic degree in creative hair and media makeup for the world of film, TV, prosthetics and fashion. Aimed at nurturing the next generation of makeup professionals, this course offers learners the industry tools, experience and facilities to thrive in the media makeup. This course is crafted to provide you with a platform to develop core technical, academic and professional skills, seamlessly guiding your transition from student to working artist. Through our strong connections to the fashion, film and TV industries, you will gain industry exposure, contacts and experience, as well as valuable feedback on your work. This includes exclusive access to bootcamps, masterclasses, and special events such as live set/studio visits, plus industry workshops as part of Screen Yorkshire’s Connected Campus initiative. Our excellent links with makeup brands and freelance artists will enable you to attend special events and industry workshops offering opportunities to gain feedback on your work. You will enjoy access to free mentoring support, fashion work opportunities and live Q&As with leading specialists, courtesy of Film Buddy UK, to help give you a competitive edge when you graduate. The course is taught at our state-of-the-art facility at Quarry Hill and functioning film and TV studio at Prime Studios. Here you will have the opportunity to connect with experts in the field and apply your knowledge in settings that mirror the realities of industry, including Quarry Hill’s makeup and photography studios, working tv studio, and fully-fitted theatre.

Modules

Modules may include: Semester 1 Final Project Studio Practice Semester 2 Final Project Professional Practice Professional Practice (20 credits): The Professional Practice module is designed for you to plan, manage, and produce an impactful event, unlocking new opportunities to network within the creative hair and media makeup industry. You will learn the art of self-promotion to ensure that you have all the tools required to become a successful practitioner within the media makeup industry. Studio Practice (40 credits): In this module you will have the opportunity to explore current industry trends and concepts such as identity, expression, and intersectionality within the social and political context of contemporary culture. The module integrates theory and practical skills, providing you with the opportunity to develop both academic depth and professional proficiency. This module is supported by industry specialists from the media makeup industry who deliver guest workshops as part of the module and sessions are delivered between Quarry Hill Campus, with purpose built makeup and hair studios and Prime Studios, a working television and production studio based in the heart of Leeds. Final Project (60 credits): The Final Project module provides you with the opportunity to conduct independent research and build project management skills. You will conduct research investigation into a relevant aspect of study which will be supported by our supervision system. You will complete research tasks that will support your chosen concept and will include critical analysis of literature and trends. You will take responsibility for the content and direction of your creative work ensuring final outcomes are suitable for the media makeup industry.

Assessment method

A range of assessment methods will be used throughout the BA (Hons) Creative Hair and Media Makeup Top-up. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including live event, visual report, presentation, final project, portfolio of images and digital portfolio. Assessment tasks are designed to ready students for employment in line with industry expectations, for example through presenting and communicating creative ideas, developing digital skills in the presentation of reports, working collaboratively with creative teams, managing projects/timescales and collating a professional portfolio and digital branded assets to help you stand out to employers and gain work in specialist industries.The live event will also provide opportunities to show work to industry specialists and will provide opportunities to develop networking and communication skills.

Foundation Degree or HND: A typical offer is likely to be pass at Foundation Degree or a HND in a relevant subject. IELTS: IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any component. International qualifications: International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Mature applicants: University centre Leeds welcomes applications from mature* applicants who may not have met the academic criteria, but who can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field. Candidates in this category and otherwise are likely to be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and may be asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application. *21 years and over at the start of the course

Additional fee information

Fees are charged per academic year. To support practical aspects of the course, you are required to purchase a professional kit. This will be ordered through University Centre Leeds. It is estimated that a full industry standard kit will cost in the region of £505. As we recognise this is a lot of money to pay upfront at the start of your course, we have made arrangements for you to be able to apply for this cost to be added to your tuition fee loan from Student Finance England, which would mean that the loan amount would be for £9250. If taking this option please note that your kit can only be issued to you once proof of your loan is received by University Centre Leeds. When applying for your tuition fee loan please either select the fee without the kit (charged at £8,745), or the fee with the kit included (charged at £9250).
