Course summary

Often called Cyber security or Information Security, in this Masters degree in Advanced Computer Security you will explore the technologies and practices designed to protect sensitive data, computers and networks from both intentional and accidental access, alterations and damage by diverse threat actors. Developed in close collaboration with industry and aligned with National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommendations and CyBok framework, the course will give you the advanced knowledge and practical experience you need to respond successfully to cyber security threats. The content is structured into three main themes: offensive security, defensive security, and information security governance. This will allow you to become a well-rounded cyber security expert, capable of applying industry-standard tools and techniques to develop secure systems and design frameworks to reduce risks. You’ll learn to conduct penetration testing (ethical hacking) and vulnerability analysis, will explore forensics and applied cryptography concepts, and will get an in-depth understanding and ability to design policies and frameworks to identify and reduce risks and satisfy legal (e.g. GDPR) and compliance obligations (e.g. ISO27701). The course modules are integrated with professional certification contents such as Cisco Networking (CCNA) and Cyber Security (CyberOps), Certified Ethical Hacking (CEH) and ISO27001 ISMS Auditing. You will have the option to undertake these certifications alongside your studies at reduced or no additional cost. You can also get involved in professional cyber security groups and industry-relevant challenges and competitions to test your skills and develop your abilities. Cardiff Met is an Academic Partner of the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec). This will provide you the opportunity to qualify as a Student Member of the CIISec and start your journey to Chartered Information Security professional status.
