Course summary

In a world where everyone can take a photograph, our course will teach you how to excel and create truly remarkable images. You can become a professional photographer and progress into a vast industry including fashion, documentary, editorial, fine art and more. Designed with industry partners and affiliation with the Association of Photographers (AOP), you will learn everything from analogue darkroom practice to industry standard digital studio workflow and post-production. With fantastic access to our industry-standard facilities, you will be fully-inducted into our specialist studios and kit. You will be introduced to a range of techniques to develop your own unique brand, vision and style of photography. Our course provides opportunities for exhibition, short filmmaking, creating your own publication, live projects, competitions and international travel. Our teaching staff are all practicing photographers and filmmakers with a vast knowledge of technical, practical and theoretical expertise. As well as qualified fellows of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Photographs have the power to enable social and environmental change. All you need to get started is a passport, a camera and a good pair of shoes. We provide you with an opportunity to experiment, explore and exhibit work with the support of high-profile practising professionals and visiting speakers to find your place in this exciting industry. The programme encourages you to establish a balance between your creative vision and the technical processes required to produce work for a number of photographic outputs and formats. Throughout the course you will have access to Canon, Sony, Hasselblad and Phase One camera systems, plus a range of industry- standard photographic equipment. You will also use a fully equipped professional studio and darkroom, which are designed to prepare you for the industry. This photography degree is based in superb facilities and taught by staff who work in the industry, so you can be assured of an exceptional learning experience. The focus is on providing you with the technical and creative skills you will need to become a successful practitioner in this industry. This means documenting the world around you through your own personal vision, creating great photographic art or fulfilling client briefs on time and within budget, while producing stunning high-quality images. Our graduates have gone on to undertake post-graduate study and/or to work in a wide range of careers including: editorial, documentary, fashion, advertising, photojournalism, sport, social portraiture, music, photo-retouching, picture editing, publishing, curating and education. All students are offered training to a professional standard in Capture One, Adobe Lightroom and the Adobe Creative Suite.

Qualification requirements

Your potential is our main focus when assessing your suitability for the programme you have applied to. Because of this, we take into account all aspects of your application and not just your academic profile. If you are a mature applicant (i.e. 21+ years), we will place more emphasis on your portfolio and the skills and experience you can demonstrate at interview. Your portfolio, which you bring to interview, is an integral part of the assessment. It should demonstrate your current skills, interests and knowledge where appropriate. It is also expected that you will bring evidence of written work to interview and/or have a Level 2 qualification in English/Literacy.

As with most creative programmes delivered at higher education, this programme will have additional costs such as material and basic tools and contribution towards educational visits to ensure successful completion of the programme. The School offers financial support packages to help with this, whether this be through means-tested bursaries and/or grants.
