Course summary

Could you develop new materials needed in our move towards a completely renewable energy society? Combining the principles of chemistry with the advanced study of materials and their practical applications in tackling global challenges, you will gain the advanced analytical techniques, data fluency, chemical design, applied problem solving and employability skills to pursue a research career as a professional materials chemist, or further your studies with a PhD. Why choose this course?

  • Individual research projects will develop your skills of scientific inquiry, allowing you to make your mark as a researcher
  • Gain the tools to succeed in research by developing your critical understanding of modern chemical sciences literature and research trends
  • Acquire the practical competence to apply advanced laboratory instrumentation, equipment and data collection methods to address new questions
  • Core practical and professional employability modules will ensure you develop the required skills to succeed as a professional materials chemist
  • You will be trained how to use research level equipment from the first semester of your first year in our sector-leading laboratory facilities
Focusing on your development as an independent researcher, our Chemistry with Materials Chemistry Integrated Master's will provide you with an advanced understanding of the fundamental theory and practical applications of materials such as batteries, fuel cells and catalysts that allow us to transport, convert, deliver and conserve energy in all aspects of our industrial society. The Materials Chemistry specialism applies a strong grounding in chemistry towards the materials chemistry principles required to solve problems at the interfaces of chemistry, physics and engineering. Threading sustainability and industrial chemistry through traditional chemical principles and theories, you will also explore the fascinating role chemistry plays in addressing humanity's most urgent global, economic, health and environmental challenges. Designed to provide you with the specialist skills you will need as a professional, modern chemist, our chemistry courses have practical and professional development modules embedded throughout our curriculum. From hands-on experience using specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation in our sector-leading laboratory facilities, to dedicated career-focused sessions and authentic assessments, we will provide you with the knowledge, tools and connections to develop a strong foundation for your future career. About Keele Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Founded to meet the needs of a changing world, Keele has always had a pioneering vision to be a different kind of university. We excel in both teaching and research, with some of the most satisfied students in England, and research that is changing lives for the better at a regional, national and global level. Our beautiful 600-acre campus is one of the biggest in Britain – but all the most important services and facilities are on your doorstep, with accommodation, teaching spaces, facilities including a medical centre, sports centre and pharmacy, and a range of shops, eateries and entertainment venues – including the Students’ Union – clustered around the centre.
