Course summary

MSc Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction is your gateway to understanding our planet’s past, present and future. This course explores how environments evolve over time and how we can use that knowledge to shape a more sustainable world. In an era of climate change and environmental crisis, there’s a growing demand for specialists who can monitor, analyse and model natural systems. Governments, industries and research institutions all need professionals who can help predict and manage environmental change. You’ll develop advanced theoretical knowledge, alongside practical expertise in collecting, interpreting, and analysing environmental data from both the present and the distant past. Explore how environmental systems interconnect and respond to both natural forces and human impact, while developing the modelling skills to understand these complex dynamics. During your studies, you’ll learn how to design and carry out field and laboratory experiments, whether you’re monitoring modern-day environmental processes or reconstructing ancient climates and ecosystems. You’ll also gain experience using real-world data to build and test environmental models, equipping you for a career in consultancy, environmental management, or further academic research. As part of the course, you’ll take part in a fully funded, week-long residential field course in Northumberland. This immersive experience gives you the opportunity to apply your skills in real-world settings, from data collection and analysis to interpreting complex environmental processes, while working closely with peers and academic experts. By combining hands-on experience with a deep understanding of environmental systems, this course equips you to tackle the pressing environmental challenges of today and tomorrow.
