Course summary
Develop your pedagogic practice as a maritime educator and increase your understanding of international maritime conventions and their application in the classroom. Course overview This course aims to provide those working in the field of maritime education with the tools to deliver maritime education and training to a global workforce. During this two-year course, you'll gain a systematic and in-depth understanding of the global maritime education framework and develop a comprehensive understanding of educational theories, practices and application within the challenging and changing environment of maritime education. You'll also develop the knowledge, skills and specialist expertise to enhance professional practice and support educators across the maritime industry. You will also develop your communication skills, enhance problem solving and technical skills, and fine tune your written and verbal skills through the use of presentations; creating videos, portfolios, or posters; designing a teaching plan; and writing essays and reports. This is a distance learning course - materials and structured content will be available on the Solent Online Learning (SOL) platform, with directed learning available 24/7 for you to review, consider, and prepare for collaborative learning sessions which are held via Teams. The taught provision will compose of a series of online modules. Each module will comprise several topics delivered as bite size chunks of learning. The subjects studied and subsequent credits gained at each level build onto deeper learning and higher qualifications. This course is for: The Maritime Education and Training master’s programme is suited to maritime educators who wish to enhance their professional practice in the field of maritime education. Applicants should ideally have worked in the maritime field, either at sea or ashore.
Modules
YEAR ONE Core modules Maritime Education: Principles and Practice The module aims to prepare maritime educators for the challenging and complex global landscape of maritime education. To achieve this, the module will examine the role of the maritime lecturer and understand the principles and practices of learning theory, curriculum design, course delivery, assessment, and student motivation. The Global Legal Framework of Maritime Education This module will develop students' knowledge and understanding of the global framework that regulates seafarer education. The content will focus on the four pillars of SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW and MLC conventions and the relationship with training. Students will discuss the requirements of the ISM Code in relation to training and the STCW Convention. Students will also be afforded familiarisation of environment, social, and governance in maritime. YEAR TWO Core modules Dissertation: This module gives you the opportunity to apply your research and analytical skills to an area of maritime education which is of interest to you. The module consists of two parts: Project Proposal and Final Major Project. The Project Proposal element will develop your skills of inquiry and research required for your Final Major Project. You will gain a confident grasp of the study skills you need to succeed at master's level, as well as demonstrate analytical, research and report writing skills at a high level which is valued by employers.

International applicants
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language.
Entry requirements
* A PGC in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent university qualification * Or a certificate of competency for service as master mariner or chief officer or chief engineer, or equivalent maritime qualifications. * Or completion of the IMEC Educate the Educator Course with completed IMEC Bridging Module. * Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are: - IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with no component score below 5.5 - TOEFL IBT 92 with a minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 20 in reading, listening and speaking - Duolingo English Language Test - 115 overall with minimum of 100 in each component or equivalent. Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University. Applicants must also have substantial directly relevant professional experience.
