Course summary

The HNC in Film and Television provides a solid foundation in developing your film making career. Camera, lens, lighting and editing all come together to expand your processes of producing different forms of media products. Practical skills and technical development are at the core of this work, engaging in planning and developing ideas in a variety of forms. As the practical projects take shape, theory is combined to enhance the production standards and consider the visual imagery that is being created. Practical workshops in the studio and on location support your personal development, while the lecture and seminar programmes engage the theoretical concepts into the work. There is the development of personal development plans which guide your learning intentions and allows your ownership of the extended studies, including directed and individual research processes to support your career intentions. Academic skills are not overlooked and there are considerations of the audience and the interpretation of visual media allowing for a consistent application of reflective practice in the flow of your studies. The film and television industry has a long-established history of being a mainstay of entertainment in people’s lives around the world. It has never been more exciting than in the current industry where technical advancements are expanding at incredible speed, while the methods and forms of audience interaction expand far beyond the confines of the movie theatre. Understanding all these changes is important to your own professional development and realisation of the employment ladder that is awaiting. The wider potential of the moving images industry steps outside of the film and television production and into areas such as social media, advertising, marketing, music promotion and corporate video production. The breadth of potential routes is ever growing and the range of skills needed along with it. It takes dedication, passion and a great deal of initiative to be fully effective in these industries and the reflective approaches of this course promotes constant creativity. The HNC leads to the HND second year where there will be opportunities to develop professional materials for progression in the industry, including a growing CV and showreel and some consideration of the form of work you will be aiming for, including developing your own business plan. The HND builds on the skills developed previously and expands them into a self-directed form appropriate for your career intentions. There are set projects, such as the production of a documentary film, but the highlight is the organised and planned final filmed production that allows you to fully extend your creative talents. Work experience is not a required element of the course, but there will be opportunities throughout the years and your tutors will discuss these with you. You are also supported to find your own work experience whilst on the course.
