Course summary
This course is accredited by the Universities Training College (UTC) of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The primary aim of the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies is to facilitate students’ academic and practical professional development as part of the requirements for professional registration in psychotherapeutic counselling/psychotherapy. This allows them in order to be able to practice as Psychotherapeutic Counsellors or Psychotherapists in a range of public, private and voluntary sector contexts. The MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies provides an initial professional training in counselling and sets students on the journey towards becoming psychotherapists. It combines academic learning, reflection and clinical work. Principally aimed at providing an initial training in working with adults, the programme also includes an introduction to working with young people. Integrative Approach
- Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy is an approach to therapy which draws on and synthesises a range of core models in counselling & psychotherapy.
- At Birmingham Newman we particularly focus on Gestalt, Psychodynamic, and CBT models. This programme is based on a Gestalt – based assimilative integrative model.

Entry requirements
You must have a degree (minimum 2:2) or equivalent and have completed a face-to-face level 3 qualification in counselling skills or equivalent, have relevant experience of using these skills in a workplace or voluntary setting, and have demonstrated at interview your suitability for undertaking professional training. Those with a 1st degree, but without a level 3 qualification, may apply for the Birmingham Newman University Introductory Certificate in Counselling and then, on successful completion, apply for the MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies. Birmingham Newman University Record of Prior Learning (RPcL/RPel) policy can be applied to any applicants who consider they have qualifications or experience that may warrant them being granted exemption from elements of a particular course. Applicants will be invited to a selection day for a group task and individual interview.
