Course summary

You'll learn to understand the theoretical principles underlying a problem, and how to engineer a solution. You'll also become familiar with the practical issues involved in developing reliable, effective software systems in business or industry. As well as being paid a salary during your placement you will pay reduced tuition fees for that year. Understand theoretical issues underlying a problem, and engineer a solution with this comprehensive five-year MComp in computer science. Put your learning into practice with the opportunity to work in industry for a year. In this ever-evolving field there is no shortage of subjects to explore. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with speech recognition, voice synthesis, text summarisation, translation… to name a few. As well as learning to program and think analytically, you'll be encouraged to work in teams and develop your communication skills. And from year two, you’ll work as part of a team to solve real problems set by real clients. The main focus of your third year is a dissertation project, where you’ll enjoy scope for creative and intellectual exploration. And in your final year, you'll get the chance to work on a substantial research project in a team, and have the option to become part of student-led software company Genesys Solutions.   • Be part of a student-led software company - get hands-on practical experience by choosing our Genesys module. Support real customers to solve genuine problems, using agile software engineering and lean startup practice – preparing you for an exciting and varied career.
  • Professional skills and group work - professional, communication and presentation skills help to create more employable computer scientists and software engineers.
  • Specialist teaching facilities - you'll have access to the latest hardware, software and operating systems, plus high-spec graphics computers and a robotics arena in our dedicated computer labs in The Diamond.
