Course summary
Effective leadership and management in healthcare require deliberate effort and the right skills. This practice-focused course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and qualities needed to become an effective healthcare leader. It aims to build your confidence in trying new and creative approaches, managing complex leadership situations, and improving patient and service outcomes. The course is suitable for all healthcare professionals, including nurses, midwives, doctors, physiotherapists, radiographers, and healthcare scientists, who wish to enhance their leadership capabilities. The course is available full-time or part-time, offering the following awards: Full-time:
- Postgraduate Diploma: four modules over eight months
- Master’s: four modules plus a dissertation over one year
- Postgraduate Diploma: four modules over two years
- Master’s: four modules plus a dissertation over three years

- Leading and Managing in Complex Organisations (30 credits)

- Dissertation (60 credits)
Entry requirements
This practice-related, master's course is aimed at all healthcare professionals including nurses, midwives, doctors, physiotherapists, radiographers and healthcare scientists who want to develop the knowledge, skills and qualities to be an effective healthcare leader. To be eligible for this course, you must hold a Bachelor’s degree with honours from a UK university or an equivalent qualification from elsewhere, such as a Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate from a UK university. This should include study comparable to at least 120 credits at honours level, as determined by the Board of College. Applicants are required to provide satisfactory references that relate to their ability to complete the course and their current position within their organisation. For international students applying full-time, you must demonstrate access to a healthcare organisation for work-based learning to contextualise theory and practice. If direct access is not possible, you should show recent knowledge of a healthcare organisation and preferably have sponsorship or continuing links with your country’s healthcare system. Understanding the philosophy of work-based learning will be essential from the start of the programme.
