Course summary

Pursue your passion for music with a Music BA (Hons) at Northumbria University and get career-ready! With a sector-leading 20 hours per year of weekly individual instrumental or vocal tuition, modules in instrumental or vocal teaching, and ear-opening music history modules which will broaden your musical horizons, this course allows you to pursue your passion for music in ways that lead to many career pathways. The music facilities at Northumbria situate brand new musical instruments inside carefully considered spaces. Our world-class Steinway Model B piano is in The Great Hall, located in the Grade II Listed Sutherland Building, which is also where spacious practice facilities are to be found. Facilities are shared between small class sizes, meaning that you can readily access practice rooms to play, compose, critique, conduct, plan, prepare, experiment, coordinate, and improvise. Extended Degree This extended degree provides an alternative route into higher education and is taken as a positive choice by students studying Music, especially if opportunities to take Music in school have been limited. In the foundation year, you will have the opportunity to consolidate your knowledge of music theory and harmony as well as developing academic skills. Many students benefit from having an extra year of weekly one-to-one tuition on their instrument with our expert instrumental and vocal tutors. What will I learn in my Foundation Year? In the foundation year, you will receive individual instrumental or vocal tuition, supported by seminars focused on practice strategies, performance techniques, and performance practice. Music history will be brought to life through visits to libraries, archives, historical homes, and other institutions, offering you the chance to engage with primary source materials and gain insights into music research methods. Workshops will help you develop practical skills and apply theory in real-world settings. For instance, your understanding of harmony will be enhanced through hands-on workshops involving the piano, guitar, and improvisation on your instrument. The foundation year of the course delivered at level 3 which develops your ability to study in Higher Education is not accredited. Subsequent levels and years are accredited and deliver the knowledge, competencies, and skills required to meet the specific course accreditation requirements that relate to the approved accredited award title.
