Course summary

This course is Distance Learning with limited contact days at the college's Main Campus This course is designed to prepare you for a career as a professional sports coach. Whether working in a performance or participation domain, in schools, governing bodies, professional sports clubs or commercial sport/activity settings, the course has been planned to challenge and support your development as a highly-skilled sport coach. Whether aspiring to coach children, adolescents or adults the course will extend your knowledge and understanding of how to design, deliver and review innovative coaching sessions, plan participant development and how to adapt to achieve desired outcomes. At the culmination of the degree programme you have the unique opportunity to undertake one of three project options:

  • Traditional research dissertation into a unique applied research question
  • Development of an applied focused an innovative sports coaching resource
  • Researching, planning and implementing a tailored sport coaching intervention as part of your professional coaching portfolio.
Previous research dissertations have included
  • Talent identification for a football academy coach
  • Evaluating the success of a community coaching programme
  • Investigation positive reinforcement in coaching delivery
  • Effectiveness of verbal feedback for a club netball coach.
Sport coaching resources have included, for example
  • Online resources for coaching disability sport
  • Planning and periodisation coaching App
  • Weight training guidance for adolescent sport participants
  • Power training to increase jump height for volleyball.
Through our unique professional coaching portfolio option, students plan a practically orientated, research underpinned, coaching intervention to address an identified coaching challenge. This option particularly supports students working towards their Level 3 Governing Body of sport coaching qualification. The teaching team are qualified Coach Educators and active coaches who combine the latest academic knowledge with practical experience. With professional experience drawn from working with local, regional, national and international levels in a wide range of sports such as rugby union, rugby league, trampolining, athletics, rowing, swimming, gymnastics, hockey and other national sports.

Modules

Core Module: Research Project and a range of optional units from Analysis of Performance, Coaching Adult Communities, Coaching Children and Young People, Coaching High Performance, Enterprise in Sport Coaching, International Sport Coaching, Strength and Conditioning and Talent Development. *Please note that these modules may be subject to change and are run subject to student numbers and staff availability, any changes will be communicated to applicants accordingly.*

Assessment method

Assessments include a range of exams, essays, projects, presentations and reports. Such diversity allows you to experience and refine various academic and professional skills to prepare for your next steps.
