Course summary

Can you create tomorrows technology? Then start here! The Foundation Degree in Computing is designed to give students a choice of progression including completing a top up year to a full degree with The University of Hull or directly into employment in the computing industry. During the course you will have the opportunity to develop software using C# and web languages such as HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL as well as creating games, building networked systems and creating physical computing solutions using Arduinos or Raspberry Pi. These are often real world problems that you will be solving either through our in house web hosting company Enterprise Solutions or through your work placement. The course involves a substantial work placement element. Applicants choosing the foundation degree will be expected to study 12 modules including the two work-based learning modules. All programmes are led and taught by experienced teaching staff who are vocational specialists.  They are qualified, and often have extensive experience within the industry or the sector being studied. All teaching staff meet or exceed the requirements set by the awarding institute or body.

All modules are mandatory Maths for computing - Yr 1 Information technology and personal skills - Yr 1 Introduction to programming - Yr 1 Software engineering with human computer interface - Yr 1 Computer hardware - Yr 1 Work based learning - Yr 1 Computer networking - Yr 2 Project management - Yr 2 Object-oriented programming - Yr 2 Data analysis and database design - Yr 2 Website development - Yr 2 Work based learning - Yr 2 You are expected to have a work placement for both years of the foundation degree.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include exams, practical assessments, presentations, group work, individual assignments, employer contribution and reflection. Examinations typically take place at the end of a module with the other assessments spread throughout the semester.

Qualification requirements

A relevant level three BTEC diploma totaling 48 Tariff points. or An A-level with relevant GCSEs at grade C or above or Previous commercial experience in the computing sector and  College interview A typical offer for this course would ask for the entry requirements to be met, however, all offers take individual applicants’ experience and qualifications into account.
