Course summary

This programme will provide you with research, theories and techniques for using AI in the design of technology mediated devices, systems and service and it will emphasise techniques for exploring and validating the ways users experience AI in their lives. This will include a thorough understanding of human capabilities, technology and the business and marketing constraints when creating and deploying novel technologies. Expose topics and issues such as data ownership and IP, living with algorithm-based decisions, privacy, security, trust and corporate vs societal responsibility. Who is this course for? This course is intended for those who are responsible for ensuring that technology, especially AI-based technology, is user-friendly and effective in both its design and delivery. It’s ideal for Product Managers, UX Researchers, Designers, and Developers. For this reason, during your studies you will systematically and rigorously explore knowledge and skills applied to real-world problems, many set by UX professionals.

Assessment method

Your course will be assessed in various ways, including coursework, exams and an independent research project (dissertation). Coursework ranges from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes. Most coursework is individual, but there is also some groupwork – often set around realistic design projects.


Entry requirements

"An upper second-class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in a relevant topic. Those working or studying in an applied domain with evidence and explanation of a commitment to a career in UX design, UX research, UX development or the application of UX interventions may also be considered. Relevant professional experience in AI-related areas could be considered to complement your academic qualifications." Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology and Design or related subjects. Those working or studying in an applied domain may be in areas such as education, architecture, medicine or care.
