Course summary

This specialist programme has been designed to provide postgraduate education and training in advanced composites (such as those based on carbon fibre or aramid) and polymers, the course covers both the materials and their processing. Driven by our internationally recognised research, the course draws upon expertise within the school in areas such as 3D woven preforms (for use in the aerospace and other transportation sectors), polymers, nanocomposites and technical textiles. The course team has a wealth of industrial experience built from collaborations with key companies including Rolls Royce, Bombardier and Airbus. The course attracts both local and international full-time students together with part-time students from industry. Part-time students who are in full-time employment can obtain credit for work-based activity in the work-based learning modules.Upon successful completion of the programme students will be more employable, particularly within the industry. Another important opportunity for MSc graduates is to explore an academic and/or research career through a PhD programme such as those offered by the School of Engineering at Ulster which hosts the MSc programme. Professional Recognition - Accredited by Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Modules

Research methods and facilities; research project (part 1); research project (part 2); polymer technology; composite engineering; process product optimisation; biomaterials 1; bioinstrumentation; tissue engineering; embedded systems rtos design; digital signal processing; micro- and nano-scale devices; nanoscale analysis and metrology; manufacturing systems; finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics; quality improvement; entrepreneurship (engineering); computer aided engineering for managers; mechanics of sheet metal forming.

Entry requirements

PgDip - Normally, an Honours or non-Honours degree or postgraduate diploma/certificate in a relevant engineering, technology or science discipline. In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant working/industrial experience, a portfolio of written evidence may be considered as an alternative entrance route. It is possible to transfer onto the MSc version of the course after successfully completing the PGDip.
