Course summary

Our MPhil is a one year programme (or up to three years part time) which focuses on the design and execution of an original research project, which occupies two thirds of the year, with remaining time devoted to courses associated with postgraduate training and preparation of a chemistry MPhil thesis.

Modules

Typical modules include: Introduction to Electrochemistry II; On-Line Searching for Synthetic Chemists; Safety; Organic Reactions, Mechanisms and Synthesis; Designing Organic Synthesis; Introduction to Electrochemistry; NMR Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry of Organic Compounds; Advanced Topics in Inorganic Chemistry; X-Ray Diffraction as a Characterization Method; Introduction to Teaching Skills for Postgraduates in Chemistry I; Introduction to Teaching Skills for Postgraduates in Chemistry II.

Assessment method

Examination, coursework and research project. For PhD; annual report, thesis and viva voce.


How to apply

International applicants

English language: Band C, IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components.

This course has a subject classification which requires students whose nationality is outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland to have an ATAS certificate, irrespective of country of residence at the point of application.

A UK bachelor’s degree with upper second-class honours or higher in chemistry or chemistry-related subject.
