Course summary

Leadership in healthcare is about guiding and influencing teams, organisations, and systems. The aim is to deliver better services and improve patient outcomes. Another aim of leadership in healthcare is to adapt to changing global health needs. Effective healthcare leaders balance clinical knowledge, policy insight, and people management. Leadership is an important skill for healthcare professionals in a climate of global pressures on the workforce. This MSc course will support you to explore leadership in modern healthcare environments. Studying this course, you will learn how to:

  • lead people and teams
  • introduce innovation
  • develop your own leadership skills
  • delve into the global context of healthcare leadership
Throughout the course, you will apply theory to healthcare environments. This will help enhance your understanding and practice applications. You will learn from healthcare professionals, with national and international experience of leadership. This will help equip you with the skills needed for your future career. We have unique partnerships with our local health-boards NHS Tayside and NHS Fife. As part of these partnerships, you will learn from expert guest speakers throughout the course. You will also have the opportunity to explore authentic contextual case studies and scenarios. The course has a fixed programme of eight compulsory modules. These modules focus on a variety of areas including:
  • developing your academic skills
  • leadership in healthcare organisations
  • leading innovation and change in healthcare
  • leaderships skills
  • global healthcare leadership
  • a dissertation
Throughout the course, you will receive support to develop your academic skills. This will help you to take critical analysis and research skills into your future professional career. This course structure will help you develop the academic skills needed to:
  • understand and embrace theories of leadership and innovation
  • apply the theories to the organisation you work in now and in the future
