Course summary
The PgCert in Middle Leadership & Management in Schools is designed for middle leaders who want to enhance and develop their practice, and experienced teachers who would like to progress to a leadership role. It will equip you with a critical understanding of the principles underpinning leadership and management, with a particular focus on leadership at the middle level in schools in posts such as Principal Teacher, Faculty Head or Department Head. - If you are a Principal Teacher or Faculty Head, or an experienced teacher who aims to progress into a leadership role in a school, this programme is designed to develop your leadership knowledge, understanding and skills.
- It uses practice-focused learning to develop your capability to lead teaching and learning within your context.
- There is a focus on collaborative learning, drawing on your own experiences and those of your academic colleagues.
- Our academic staff play a leading role in the area of professional learning and leadership development in Scotland and beyond. They have been involved in a range of research projects on headteacher recruitment, teacher leadership, coaching and leadership development, teachers’ work and collaborative professional enquiries.

Entry requirements
A degree (or equivalent qualification) and a teaching qualification. A minimum of 3 years teaching experience after full professional registration. You also require full professional registration as a schoolteacher (e.g. Full Registration (GTCS), Qualified Teacher Status (TRA) or equivalent). Ensure that you upload your registration certificate with your application. Some experience of leadership beyond the classroom (e.g. leading at wider school level or leading staff). Please upload a short CV with your application. The CV should focus upon your leadership experience beyond the classroom and should be no more than 500 words. A reference from your Head Teacher or employer which endorses your suitability for middle leadership and confirms access to a suitable work environment. Access to a suitable workplace environment to undertake the practice-based components of the programme.
