Course summary

Our foundation degrees are equivalent to studying the first two years of an honours degree, but unlike traditional degrees they have more flexible entry requirements and allow you to achieve a Foundation degree after just two years. Created in collaboration with employers, they combine academic study with developing the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. It makes them ideal preparation for a specific profession or industry or for making progress in your existing career. You can always convert to a full honours degree by taking a Level 6 programme on completion. If you already work with children from 0-8 years or wish to start this course is right for you. This is a full-time programme but your are only expected to attend UCWISE for one day per week and work in either voluntary or paid work for two and half days. This contemporary and inclusive foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies supports you to develop expert knowledge of child development. Professionally relevant, the course combines in-depth academic study with meaningful practical application for children ranging from 0-8 years old. You will collaborate with others, follow independent lines of enquiry, and draw on professionals’ and lecturers’ experience to develop your knowledge and skills. The first year, provides underpinning knowledge in a range of areas, including reflective practice, sociology of education, SEND, strategies to engage young minds importance of effective communication and partnership working. The second year encourages a more detailed understanding of contemporary topics and allows you to investigate issues that you are passionate about. You will look academically at theories of learning and development, consider international perspectives, and draw on current debates within education. During the course, you will gain a strong core of knowledge in psychology, sociology, and the holistic development of children. It is a highly engaging course taught through lectures, collaborative and independent study, and events with the university, and offers a uniquely supportive and challenging learning environment. To complete the course successfully, students studying this Degree will be required to be in paid or voluntary work for at least two and a half days per week or equivalent (16 hours). If English isn't your first language you will need to undertake an IELTS qualification achieving an overall grade of 6 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent) GSCE requirements: GCSE English and Maths grade C or 4.
