Course summary

This full-time programme, validated by Ulster University, is designed for students who are interested in a career in the fields of town planning, property investment, development or housing management and who require a Foundation Degree to enhance employment prospects or progression to an undergraduate qualification in this area of study. This course is also suitable for students who want a change in career.  Successful completion of the course will enable students to enhance their employment prospects and/or to progress to higher academic study.  A key feature of this course is a work-based learning placement within the student’s chosen sector.  In the past students have secured placements in Planning Departments of Local Councils, Housing Associations, Private Planning Consultancies and Residential/Commercial Estate Agents. Assessment method

Assessment is by a combination of coursework, practical and written examination including a 400-hour work placement period in the second year of the course. Note students must source and secure a suitable placement location/provider.​

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Applicants must satisfy the Ulster University General Entrance Requirements as specified in the University General Regulations and at least one of the following: 1. A minimum of three passes at GCSE Grade C or 4 and above, which must include Mathematics and English Language (approved equivalents can be found at www.ulster.ac.uk/study/entrance-requirements), and either a). A minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points at GCE A Level, or 56 UCAS points with grade D in Geography or Business Studies.; or b). Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma, OCR National or Cambridge Technical in Construction, Engineering, or Business with a minimum grade of Merit Pass Pass (MPP); or c). A minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points with a combination of A Level and/or BTEC Level 3 qualifications, or 56 UCAS points with Geography or Business Studies. 2. Irish Leaving Certificate: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points with four subjects at Higher Level, or 56 UCAS including one subject at H3 from Geography or Business Studies. Must include English and Maths at min grade H6 or O4. 3. Scottish Highers: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points or 56 UCAS points to include one from Geography or Business Studies: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points or 56 UCAS points to include one from Geography or Business Studies. Must include GCSE Maths and English at grade C or 4 and above. 4. Access Course: A minimum 45% in approved Access to HE Diploma course, with relevant subject area. 5. Evidence of an ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning which must be submitted in accordance with the College Policy Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Higher Education Process available on the college website. 6. You must ensure that you meet the following non-academic entry requirements, for courses running during academic year September 2026 – August 2027: You must be 16 years old by 1 July 2026 (born before 2nd July 2010). You must provide proof of your right to study in the UK. For courses with work placement, you must also provide proof of your right to work in the UK. You must provide photographic evidence of your identity. Access NI/ SOSCARE - Admission to certain courses will be subject to satisfactory Access NI/criminal records and SOSCARE checks. Criminal Convictions Disclosure - The College has a student Criminal Convictions Disclosure Policy therefore you must disclose criminal convictions when applying or enrolling onto a course. English language requirements

There are minimum English Language requirements for full-time Higher Education programmes. Applicants must hold a GCSE pass at Grade C/4 or above in English Language. Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills Literacy may be regarded as an acceptable alternative to GCSE English Language. The College may accept an equivalent level of qualification. Some courses may require higher than the minimum Grade C/4. You are advised to check the individual course entry requirements. You can find these within the Entry Requirements section under each individual course. Where a GCSE grade in English is specified as the only qualification accepted, other English competency qualifications may not apply. If you have not achieved GCSE English Language Grade C/4 or an equivalent level, you will be asked to provide evidence of English Language competency. Other qualifications may be accepted as evidence of level of competency on a case-by-case basis. Where an ESOL qualification is used, the appropriate level must be achieved across all skills - Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening.
