Course summary
This is a unique course, where you will have the opportunity to experience and understand teaching in a sport context. This is the only course of its kind in the North East and is aimed at those who have a sport or exercise related Foundation Degree (or equivalent) and have an interest in working in the education sector. As well as a focus on sports related topics, the course offers a module which will introduce you to the 14+ education sector. You will have the chance to participate in industry conferences and events as well as visits to industry partners. You will also benefit from industry expertise via our guest lecture series. As part of this course you’ll be expected to focus your dissertation on an educational issue. You will be able to get involved in research focusing on your chosen field. Our graduates have secured employment in roles including sports coaching or sports development work. This course has been designed to give you an insight into teaching and help you to gain valuable experience. Upon successful completion of the course there is the option to undertake further training via a PGCE for those wishing to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Modules
Career Development, Dissertation, Introduction to Teaching, Learning and Assessing in Sport and Exercise, Research Methods 3. Optional module (choose from): Applied Psychological Support or Athlete Evaluation.
Assessment method
You will learn through a range of methods including lectures and seminars where the theory is related to current industry practice. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence. Assessment is carried out through reports, portfolios, practical assessment, teaching assessment, work-based case-studies, reflective journals, video assessments and presentations.
