Course summary
This course is aimed at deepening the students’ over all understanding of Islam within historical and modern contexts while providing an opportunity to study Quran, Hadith and other Islamic texts extensively. The programme is structured to benefit students who aspire to continue their studies to a PhD degree and to become future lecturers in the field as well as to those who may seek employment in various fields requiring expertise in Islam.
Modules
Core modules: Sources of Islamic knowledge; Islamic theology; methods and perspectives in Islamic studies. Plus 3 from: Islamic mysticism; Islamic philosophy; authority in Shi’a Islam; classical history of Islam; Islamic law; Islam and modern politics; Islam and modernity.
Assessment method
Students are required to complete a dissertation of 12000-15000 words.
How to apply
International applicants
International students should have completed a suitable undergraduate qualification and have a minimum IELTS grade of 6.5 or equivalent.
Entry requirements
Applicants should hold a 1st or good 2nd Class Honours degree in Islamic Studies or related fields; consideration is also given to other qualifications on an individual basis; non-formal qualifications may also be considered; applicants with no relevant background may be advised to take some foundation modules in Islamic Studies and especially in Arabic language; all applicants are invited for interview; where applicants cannot attend an interview, the application may be discussed over a telephone conversation; applicants whose 1st language is not English should provide at least IELTS results of 6.5 or equivalent.
