Course summary

Established in 1840 as a teacher training college and graded as Outstanding by Ofsted, the University of Winchester has an excellent reputation for high-quality teacher education programmes. The PGCE Primary with PE course is designed for student teachers who aspire to become primary school teachers with proficiency in physical education. The course prepares you to teach every national curriculum subject and includes additional physical education sessions focusing on essential knowledge for accomplished teachers and future subject leaders. Our highly sought-after graduates are equipped to succeed. We endeavour to develop confident and passionate primary school teachers of physical education who will advocate the subject beyond the course and rise to the challenge of leading this vital curriculum area. The course provides the opportunity to learn to teach in a stimulating and supportive environment from tutors with extensive expertise and experience. You leave the programme as a high-quality postgraduate teacher equipped with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to empower and educate others. Trainees will be placed in schools and will experience teaching in Key Stages 1 and 2. Student teachers will be assessed on the teaching of all primary subjects as well as physical education. Student teachers are expected to participate fully in the practical sessions, exploring topics including dance, gymnastics, invasion games, and many more. Student teachers will develop their understanding of the benefits and value that physical education can bring to all children and their role in achieving this. The course also provides opportunities to delve into debates within physical education, such as the role of competition and the importance of inclusivity. It's important to note that student teachers do not need high levels of sporting prowess to succeed in this course. What matters most is your eagerness to develop their skills and make a positive impact on young people's physical health and well-being. We value and respect the unique contributions each student can make in this field. The programme prides itself on the support and guidance offered to students. Every student has a Professional Development Tutor who monitors and supports their progress through the programme. Progress is tracked academically and professionally to demonstrate that you have met the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education 2012) by the end of your training.
