Course summary

Discover the integration of electronic, mechanical, machine learning and control engineering to realise a complete system, which may be a product, machine or a process in our BEng Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering course. We also offer a MEng course which is four years, - it's a longer period of study because it is an undergraduate course with an integrated Masters.  It's a multidisciplinary subject that employs design principles, processes, models, toolsets and philosophy unique to mechatronics and robotics engineers to enable the design and development of automated, more efficient and reliable systems. You’ll cover a unique balance of key analytical subjects, management and professional skills, ensuring that you're well-equipped to face challenging engineering situations in industry. You'll discover the structure and properties of a range of materials, learn structural design, learn how to perform tests, interpret scientific information, explore mathematical concepts and their use in engineering, and the laws and theories you need to apply electricity to your engineering solutions. Gain an understanding of analogue and digital signals and learn why vibration can be such a problem in mechanical engineering systems. Learn the C++ programming language, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), with a view to conducting research, obtaining test data, building FEA and CFD models, and validating your results from case studies. Explore, improve, design and build mechatronics systems and products using specialist software packages; assessing feasibility, creating/sourcing the required CAD files, performing FEA and CFD tests, and creating and fully testing your prototype. Gain an understanding of the concerns of engineers today, including environmental, sustainability and ethical issues, safety, commercial and legal considerations, and quality standards. Studying mechatronics and robotics equips you with high-demand skills in automation, control systems, and robotics, opening career paths in fast-growing sectors like renewable energy, automotive, and modern technology. With expertise in electronics, mechanical, and control integration, you’ll have opportunities to design and manage complex systems, enhancing earning potential and career progression in innovative engineering fields.

Assessment method

Working individually and as part of a group, you’ll use appropriate manufacturing processes and industry-standard equipment to design and build basic electronic circuits and integrate mechanical products with these circuits, following safety regulations. In doing so, you’ll gain an understanding of manufacturing processes and mechatronics. You’ll start thinking about your future career by finding out about the different paths available to you. You’ll gain an understanding of the concerns of engineers today, including environmental, sustainability and ethical issues, commercial and legal considerations, and quality standards. You’ll hear from and meet representative from across the industry, and be encouraged to join professional bodies.
