Course summary

Develop the knowledge and skills to plan and evaluate public health programmes on our master’s degree in Public Health. You will develop robust research and analytical skills and gain a critical understanding of the factors that drive public health theory and practice. Drawing on international case studies, evidence and practice, you will explore how public health programmes and policies are planned, measured and evaluated and the socio-economic and political forces that affect them. You will gain a clear understanding of the social determinants of health and how effective public health programmes can help identify and address inequalities within societies. To underpin your studies, you will learn thorough research, evaluation and analytical skills that you can apply in a wide range of settings. This programme is ideal if you have experience working with or within health systems and want to gain a deeper understanding of broader Public Health theory, approaches and methods of research and analysis. Our students come from all over the world and bring a wealth of professional clinical and non-clinical experience in sectors including:

Modules

This MPH is made up of:

  • Four 15-credit compulsory core modules
  • One 30-credit core elective module (from a choice of two)
  • Two further 15-credit elective modules, or one 30-credit elective module
  • One 60-credit dissertation.
As a part-time student, you will normally take 30 credits per term and as a full-time student, you will take 60 credits per term. Your studies will be divided into five core taught modules, one (30 credit) or two (15 credit) elective modules selected from a broad range to support your own areas of interest, and a dissertation on your specialist topic. Dissertation (60 credits) The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to undertake a piece of original, independent research focussed on the topics that are of particular interest to you, and you wish to explore in greater depth.

Assessment method

You will learn through a dynamic mix of lectures delivered by our academic staff as well as expert guest speakers, peer learning activities, guided independent study and individual supervision. There are two delivery modes – blended and online. The blended mode entails attendance in online lectures and tutorials with in-person attendance at City, University of London. The online mode can be completed fully online from any location in the UK or globally. Your studies will be divided into five core taught modules, one (30 credit) or two (15 credit) elective modules selected from a broad range to support your own areas of interest, and a dissertation on your specialist topic. You will be assessed through a combination of written coursework, dissertation, group work and examination.


Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a first or upper second-class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Relevant employment experience in the health sector is taken into consideration. Applicants who have a lower second-class honours degree but have relevant employment experience in the health sector may be considered. For those students whose first language is not English, the following qualification is also required: - IELTS: 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each category - TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking"
