Ever thought about how a book can change society? Studying English is a way of thinking about today’s world, including vital political issues such as race, climate, gender and sexuality. At Sussex, you’ll be taught by expert researchers with knowledge of literature through centuries of history and across the globe. You’ll explore a diverse range of texts and voices. In the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, you’ll become part of a friendly community of students and academics. On this course, you:

  • study big themes, periods and genres of literature
  • focus on individual authors in detail
  • take electives from other subjects – from video games to sustainability and social justice – to open your mind to other disciplines and tailor your degree to your interests
  • explore how literary criticism connects with other disciplines, such as philosophy or anthropology, and political movements, such as feminism, anti-colonialism and LGBTQ liberation.
You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with your own writing, supported by our experts. They have links with the creative industries, as well as literary events such as the poetry series Placeholder and the festival The Coast is Queer. You’ll:
  • work with unique archive material from The Keep, including Virginia Woolf’s letters
  • go on field trips to locations such as Monk’s House and Shakespeare’s Globe
  • be encouraged to attend regular events for students and staff
  • have the opportunity to publish your work on our in-house typography press.
