Course summary

The Higher National Diploma Top-Up in Performing Arts (Dance) is a vocational course which expands upon students’ previous learning and training from the Higher National Certificate. The course further develops students’ technical skills and understanding of a range of contemporary and traditional genres. Building on learning in their previous studies, students will develop skills and knowledge through creative, technical and practical workshops, underpinned with relevant theoretical, historical and cultural reference.

Assessment method

The programme is assessed mainly through practical performance and assessment; continuous assessment across rehearsal and development and evaluative interviews to assess personal development and contribution. The submission of written essays, evaluations, logbooks and presentations is also a part of the HND; learning research, academic skill and writing skill to ensure that students are equipped for higher level learning. Students will gain formative feedback verbally for both written work and practical assessment. Peer and self-assessment is an essential element of personal development which enhances the learning experience and allows space for personal evaluation.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

It is expected that all applicants will hold relevant Level 2 maths and English qualifications equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or above. Mature students: The University Centre welcomes applications from mature students who have relevant experience in lieu of the minimum entry requirements. Mature students (over 21) without formal qualifications may be accepted subject to satisfactory literacy and numeracy tests, work experience (if applicable) and a strong personal statement. Recognition of Prior Learning: Applicants may meet entry requirements through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which awards academic credits through recognition of prior learning via work and other life experiences. Recognition of Prior Learning is either certificated (RPCL) through formal assessment, or Experiential (RPEL) via skills and knowledge developed through work and voluntary activities.
