Course summary

Are you interested in pursuing a career in counselling or another helping profession? Would you like to take a scientific approach to learning more about your own mind, emotions, and actions? Our programme will provide you with an accredited psychology degree as well as a grounding in the counselling skills required to support individuals in exploring the issues and challenges that underpin their well-being. Why choose this course?

  • This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • Acquire counselling skills relevant to a career in professional counselling
  • Personalise your studies with a variety of optional modules
  • Broaden your horizons by spending a year studying abroad
  • Gain the employability skills to enter a broad range of careers in business, service, education and caring professions
Our Psychology with Counselling BSc will equip you with a well-rounded education. In addition to studying the principal areas specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) curriculum, you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to reflect your career aspirations and interests. As no prior knowledge of psychology is required, during years one and two we will provide you with fundamental scientific skills in research design, statistics, qualitative and survey methods. This will enable you to conduct your own research and critically analyse that of others. In your final year you will work with one of our expert academics to complete a research project from a menu of topics. In addition to the Psychology content on the programme you will also undertake modules that are focussed on counselling skills and self-development. You will learn how to use counselling skills to support people to talk about their issues and experiences from an emotional and psychological perspective. You will enrich your learning and develop your self-awareness by taking part in personal development groups with your peers. All counselling lectures are led by qualified practicing counsellors. Please note: this is not a practitioner training programme and does not qualify you to work with clients. However, if you wish to become a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist or counselling psychologist in the future this programme can lead on to these courses of study. You may choose to continue your studies at Keele. About Keele Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.
