Course summary

The FdA Prosthetics, Modelmaking and Digital Design is a two-year programme with the option to progress to the BA (Hons) L6 course to complete an honours degree. This Foundation Degree will develop technical practical skills, with a focus on the workshop roles of the prosthetics and related modelmaking industries. Learners will sculpt, mould, cast and apply prosthetic make-up designs, develop key workshop skills and suitable work practice, build product knowledge, and explore methods used within industry. Current design practice is established across both traditional and digital tools and methods used within the TV, Film and wider creative industries. Design investigations will support the creation of practical prosthetic characters and models/props, while understanding how technology collaborates with physical components to create finished articles. You will have access to fully equipped workshop spaces and make-up studios at WISE, alongside the FdA and BA Specialist Make-up Design (L6) students. This area is specifically for degree students and provides professional facilities to work on projects. You may also access other facilities such as digital design studios. SGS College will provide essential materials and tools for all modules. You will be required to purchase a kit of personal tools and equipment to support your studies (costs and specifications will be shared with students before enrolment). You will develop fundamental prosthetics practical skills, such as sculpting for small pieces, flat mould making and face casting, alongside building essential contextual knowledge. This will lead to you developing components for a flat mould focused prosthetics design. You will develop fundamental digital design skills and will aim to build competency with industry-standard software. Essential skills will be developed for application of pre-made prosthetics and the use of a variety of materials. We will focus on developing essential prosthetics application and make-up skills, using pre-made prosthetic pieces to apply and colour appropriately. Engagement in further advanced prosthetics and modelmaking skills will develop your techniques and work practice suited to workshop-based industry roles, in the creation of physical works. You will explore your creative practice, with an emphasis on 3D traditional techniques such as clay sculpting, enhancing prior practical design skills by developing methods, tools and product/materials awareness. Your employment aspirations will be nurtured and supported by opportunities, such as visiting professionals, giving insight into professional practice and industry expectations. You will be required to buy or top up your existing kit for this course. There may be an allocated visit as part of your study funded via your paid course fees– the course tutor will advise you of this trip and dates. Additional trips and visits to enrich your course will be at additional cost (not included in any college fees). Part time routes are available.
