Course summary

Education at the University of Southampton is ranked 14th in the UK (The Complete University Guide, 2025). Our iPhD could be right for you if you have a research study in mind that would make an original contribution to education but you do not have a master’s degree that included a significant research element. In the first 12–18 months, we’ll equip you with a foundation in research skills and support you to develop your proposal. You will complete a range of research and Education modules with the opportunity to explore the best in professional knowledge, cutting-edge research, and evaluation evidence in a variety of educational contexts. In the second phase of your programme you will undertake a substantial research project leading to a PhD thesis. You will receive support from a supervisory team with specialist expertise in your area. Carrying out world-leading research in higher education, social justice and inclusive education, educational effectiveness, mathematics, science and health education

Modules

Typical modules include: Understanding Education Research; Philosophy of Social Science Research; Research Design and Practice; Qualitative Methods I; Quantitative Methods I. During Year 1, you will commence work on a project module designed to support the transition from initial research training to your research study and work on the PhD thesis. You may select a range of optional modules.

Assessment method

Assessment is by written assignments, presentation, annual reports, confirmation of candidature through submission of an interim thesis, final thesis, and viva voce.


Entry requirements

A UK Bachelors degree with upper second-class honours and a Master of Science/Art in a relevant subject (or equivalent overseas qualification), plus research proposal and satisfactory performance at interview.
