Course summary

Accelerate your career in biochemistry by gaining the advanced problem-solving, communication and research skills to address real-world issues. Investigating some of the most exciting areas of 21st century life science and medical research, our four-year programme will be of particular interest to those who wish to continue in a research career, such as further study to PhD level, working in industry or the wider bioscience sector. Why choose this course?

  • Benefit from a wide range of third year research project choices, supporting your final year extended MSci project
  • Design and conduct an in-depth extended research project including formulating a complete research strategy and producing a grant proposal
  • Attend research-level seminars delivered by world-leading experts and invited speakers to develop your skills in the acquisition and critical analysis of primary scientific literature
  • Hone your communication skills by presenting outcomes of your final year project as a research article and delivering an oral presentation and poster at our MSci research conference
  • Enhance your employability skills with our comprehensive programme of academic and professional development workshops
Our programme explores human and mammalian biochemistry and how this is advancing our understanding of the molecular basis of conditions ranging from diabetes and cancer, to the interactions of microorganisms and viruses with their hosts as agents of infectious disease, and how this can be controlled. Initial modules will provide you with a broad and varied grounding in modern biochemistry. Building on this you will continue to expand your skillset by examining the application of biochemistry to topics such as drug design or structure and function of proteins involved in the immune response. In your third year, you will choose from a range of optional modules in areas of cutting-edge bioscience research and complete a Research Project. The fourth year of study is designed to enhance your research skills in the critical evaluation of scientific literature and in the design and conduct of an authentic research study. You will also develop a greater awareness of research impact, the processes involved in communicating your research findings and securing funding. About Keele Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.
