Course summary

Our BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy course will give you the skills you need to register with the General Dental Council as a dental therapist or dental hygienist. The course takes a holistic approach to primary dental care. You will be trained to undertake a number of clinical procedures, such as periodontal treatment, simple fillings, dental radiographs and the extraction of primary teeth. You will also develop excellent communication skills to motivate and encourage patients to develop good oral health habits. We guarantee interviews on the BDS course for those students who have performed exceptionally well in the final year of the Dental Hygiene and Therapy course at The University of Manchester. Details of this scheme are published internally for eligible students.

Additional entry requirements

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

All potential students have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This will reveal any criminal convictions, spent or unspent, as well as any police cautions, warnings or reprimands. Applicants must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, warnings or reprimands on their UCAS application. Some criminal convictions may preclude candidates from working as a dentist therapist/hygienist.

Health checks

In Manchester, you will be introduced to the clinic in the first term, which means that you will have to produce satisfactory evidence on non-infectivity with respect to the blood-borne viruses HIV, hepatitis B and C and tuberculosis.

Interview

No offer is made without a successful interview. We run a multiple mini interview format at Manchester and interviews will be held in February of the current admissions cycle.
