Course summary

Celtic Studies provides the opportunity to combine language study with a range of courses on the medieval and modern Celtic cultures of the British Isles. English language and linguistics combines the study of the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, to see what all this tells us about our culture, our society and ourselves. You will have the opportunity to study the medieval and modern cultures of Celtic-speaking peoples with scholars at the cutting edge of research, and learn a Celtic language of the British Isles. We have been teaching English Language and Linguistics for over 75 years and our staff are leaders in their fields. We created the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a unique resource charting the semantic development of the huge and varied vocabulary of English, and we have dedicated laboratories for analysing spoken and written language. Recent graduates have entered a range of careers including primary and secondary teaching; working with museums and government heritage bodies; publishing and book marketing; music; entrepreneurship. Others have gone on to further study and to pursue successfully a career in research and academic work.
