Course summary

This is a unique, interdisciplinary MA in queer studies. Since 1991, the course has brought together dynamic, engaged students and faculty to develop cutting-edge research on sexuality. You’ll learn to bring a radical, contemporary, global approach to the study of sexuality. Organised by the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, this MA:

  • addresses present-day issues of sexuality within a global context
  • provides a firm foundation in queer theory
  • allows you to tailor your studies to your interests.
The MA is associated with the Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence, a research hub for sexuality and queer studies. Through the Centre, you’ll have opportunities to get involved in research and arts events, and to connect with faculty and students who care about issues of gender and sexuality. You’ll study in Brighton, a city known for its vibrant activist, queer and arts communities. It's also near London. So you’ll have opportunities to enrich your studies by exploring nearby events and communities. Core modules Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most. Critical Issues in Queer Theory Dissertation (Sexual Dissidence) Options Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. Careers The MA is relevant to number of career directions, including: policy, activism and international development, such as research and interventions in sexuality, rights and health academic research related to queer studies in a wide range of fields, including literature, cultural studies, media studies, film studies, development, international relations and anthropology teaching, including in higher education media, writing and the arts, in particular queer representation, difference and diversity. Entry requirements You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above.

Modules

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. Options Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. Entry requirements

Degree requirements: You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should normally be in a subject relevant to your chosen Masters course. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
