Course summary
We offer research supervision in a wide range of subdisciplines of English language and linguistics. We welcome projects on any variety of English and are able to supervise the description and analysis of a range of languages. We particularly welcome applications in the areas of:
- descriptive grammar (including typological approaches) and/or theoretical syntax
- discourse analysis (especially political and media discourse, discourse of identity, corpus linguistic approaches)
- language variation and change
- morphology, phonology, orthography
- pragmatics (including intercultural pragmatics and im/politeness)
- semantics, lexicology, (meta)lexicography
- stylistics.
Modules
Recent thesis titles include: May and can in French-English interlanguage; multiple verb constructions in Korean; null subjects in Kenyang; the argumentative function of metaphor. Examples of current areas of PhD research: a cognitive stylistic approach to cinematic characterisation, a descriptive grammar of the Hadari Kuwaiti dialect of Arabic; verbs of motion in Tunisian Arabic.

Entry requirements
You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Masters degree. Your qualification should be in English language or linguistics or a related subject area. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
