The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is the graduate entry route to those who want to become a Primary or Secondary teacher in Scotland. The PGDE is an internationally recognised qualification, newly qualified teachers will be able to apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) or equivalent in their home country. The qualification is recognised throughout the world and is regulated by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and the Scottish Government. You learn from on-campus classes and 18 weeks of placements in schools in Scotland. The qualification allows you to teach in locations worldwide. If you're a Scottish, rest of UK or EU student, you're guaranteed a job for one year in a Scottish school after you graduate. Your Career A degree in education will equip you for a range of careers working with children and young people. Most of our PGDE graduates go on to work as teachers in secondary schools across the country. Qualification requirements

The entry requirements for PGDE courses are based on the requirements set by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). An ordinary degree, or international equivalent. Degree must include: 80 SCQF credits in the language you wish to teach (if you wish to teach your native language, see 'Native Speakers' section below) The General Teaching Council for Scotland has confirmed that the period of residency for session 2023/24 has reverted to that given in the Memorandum on Entry Requirements ie 6 months for the first language and 3 months for the second. We are of the view that applicants require the language and cultural elements provided by immersion in the relevant country to help them share their love of languages. The applicant’s academic study must include an element that will allow them to contribute to the wider aspects of programmes of study in schools, such as literature, cultural studies, area studies or languages in work. While living abroad the applicant must have fully taken part in the language and culture of the relevant country. Applicants must normally live in the relevant country in blocks of at least three months. First language: 80 credits in the first language six months' residency before course starts evidence of residency must be provided Second language: 80 credits in the second language three months' residency before course starts evidence of residency must be provided Residency can be evidenced by: transcript from year abroad a statement from a University authority British Council Course organiser Employer Senior family member with whom they have lived, confirming dates of residency. The statement should normally be in the past tense specifying clearly the dates completed. Native speakers: a degree in own language native speakers of a modern language who have finished a degree in their own language which meets the requirements for the first language offered outlined above may train to teach their native language. For example; a Chinese student with a degree in Chinese can train to teach Mandarin in Scotland. students who are native speakers of a modern foreign language and have a degree in a language other than their native tongue may train to teach that language plus their native tongue. For example; a French student with a degree in Spanish can train to teach French and Spanish in Scotland, presuming that the candidate meets the residency requirements for both languages.

Additional fee information

Undergraduate students who live in Scotland will usually have their tuition fees paid by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you have previously attended university or college or are not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS to check your eligibility to have your fees paid. SAAS will pay your tuition fees directly to Strathclyde. Most undergraduate students from the rest of the UK (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) will receive a free year of tuition as, assuming no change in Rest of UK fees policy over the period, the total amount payable by undergraduate students will be capped. For students commencing study next session, this is capped at £27,750. Students studying on Integrated Masters degree programmes pay an additional £9,250 for the Masters year with the exception of those undertaking a full-year industrial placement where a separate placement fee will apply.
