Course summary

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Community Coaching develops professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the UK Coaching sector. The qualification improves the career prospects of students, equipping them with the community coaching skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the UK coaching environment. Upon completion of this 1 year course, students can progress to employment or progress to higher qualifications such as Higher National Diplomas in Sports Science (Coaching Science) or direct entry to the 2nd year of a honours degree programme in a related subject area. The BTEC HNC in Community Coaching for England maps into the occupational standards for a Sports Coach (Community Coach) and has been designed in collaboration with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). This course has been strategically put together with support from employers and previous students to create a pathway that enables students to advance into a number of different careers in sport coaching and sports and exercise science. Our strong partnerships with employers is a unique selling point, as these partners are involved in course design and delivery - providing real-life approaches to assessments, for example live briefs, masterclasses, being on presentation panels etc.

Assessment method

Students will be taught by experienced lecturers, who all have subject specialisms and industry experience. Teaching will take place in our state of the art Sports Academy facilities, which include a gym, digital exercise studio, sports hall, sports science laboratory, sports massage facility, outdoor pitches and Goals soccer centre. Teaching sessions include practicals, seminars and workshops. There are no specific placement units on the HNC, however our experienced staff support all of our students with part-time employment opportunities in the sector and many units will include live project briefs with external clients (eg primary and secondary schools, community clubs etc)
