Why choose the BSc Electronic Music, Computing & Technology with Foundation Year This is a four-year degree with an integrated foundation year, where you study electronic music, composition, technology and computing.

  • This interdisciplinary programme provides the opportunity to build these skills and the foundation year will prepare you for university life and to study our BMus/BSc Electronic Music, Computing and Technology.
  • You'll compose and produce electronic music, work towards creating your own tools for music-making, developing your own digital musical instruments, building interactive installations, and working in sound design.
  • You'll develop a range of interdisciplinary and academic skills in music and computing.
  • As well as developing your own musical practice in composition, you'll learn key skills in computing.
  • With the help of personal and one-to-one tuition, you'll develop essential knowledge in areas such as mathematics and programming, creative musical skills, and academic skills such as essay writing, setting you up for success in your undergraduate degree.
  • You'll have the chance to make and explore different styles of music with students across the Department of Music. Styles are varied and include laptop ensembles, instrumental ensembles, open mic nights, gamelan, mbira and improvising groups.
  • You'll also have the opportunity to perform at open mics, student-run showcase and PureGold, our annual music festival that celebrates music created and performed at Goldsmiths.
  • The degree is designed to meet the opportunities, challenges and intellectual demands presented by careers in the arts and creative industries, in music technology and in audio, music and media-related computing.

Modules

This degree allows you to identify and develop your strengths and interests by choosing various specialist options in the Departments of Music and Computing. Year 0 You'll study the following compulsory modules during your foundation year. Introduction to Musicology Foundation for Composition Foundations of Programming Foundations of Mathematics for Computing Building Your Research World Year 1 (credit level 4) You'll study the fundamentals of of electronic music, audio technology, computer programming, and music technology. You will study the following compulsory modules: Introduction to Programming Sound and Signal 1 Contemporary Music Industries Music Computing 1 Live Performance Systems Electronic Music Composition Year 2 (credit level 5) In Year 2, you'll select from two possible pathways through the programme, which will determine the award of either BMus (Hons) or BSc (Hons). BMus pathway You'll take the following compulsory module: Music Computing 2 Optional modules You take modules worth at least 45 credits in Music modules. The remaining 45 credits can be taken in Music or Computing. The lists of modules are provided each year by the Music and Computing departments. BSc pathway You'll take the following compulsory modules: Music Computing 2 Sound and Signal 2 Optional modules You take modules worth at least 30 credits in Computing modules. The remaining 45 credits can be taken in Computing or Music. The lists of modules are provided each year by the Music and Computing departments. Options may include the following: Extended C++ Creative Computing Project 2 Interaction Design Year 3 (credit level 6) BMus pathway You will take the following compulsory modules: EMCT: Music Project Prototype EMCT: Music Final Project Those on this pathway also choose optional modules worth at least 45 credits from the Department of Music. The remaining 30 credits can be taken in Music or Computing. BSc pathway You will take the following compulsory modules: EMCT: Computing Project Prototype EMCT: Computing Final Project Those on this pathway also choose optional modules worth at least 45 credits from the Department of Computing. Optional modules From the Department of Music Live Performance Writing to Brief Audiovisual Composition and its Contexts Capturing Music and Practice Sculpting Electronic Sound Music Education, Outreach and Inclusion From the Department of Computing Extended C++ Physical Computing Data and Machine Learning for Creative Practice Digital Venture Creation Neural Networks Expressive Game Design Industrial Placement Year The degree includes an optional Industrial Placement Year between the second and third year of study. This offers you the invaluable opportunity to develop the practical skills and real world experience that is sought after by employers. You're supported throughout your placement year by a placement tutor, who provides you with guidance and liaises between you and your employer. Please note that due to staff research commitments not all of these modules may be available every year.

Qualification requirements

We would normally expect applicants to have some level 3 study equivalent to grade C at A Level or PP in a BTEC Diploma, however, we will also consider experience of music technology or electronic music composition and production. Offers will be made specific to your educational background and experience. Admission is by interview and/or by submission of a portfolio. The portfolio should include two tracks of original music and a written description of experience in music, technology and computing.
