Course summary

BA Fine Art: Sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts explores the interplay between materials, social practices, intercultural and international contexts. The course values the importance of 'thinking through making'. Taking a practical approach, you’ll learn how to sculpt using both traditional and digital techniques and materials. This experimentation will expose you to the diverse nature of sculpture and its vast applications across disciplines including performance, installation and film making. Throughout the course, you'll examine the relationship between people and objects. You'll consider the social, cultural and environmental contexts in which objects are made and consumed. Understanding this connection between the human and material world will help you develop a strong practice that can be applied to a wide range of professional settings. What to expect • The history: Broaden your critical, theoretical and historical knowledge of sculpture and its position within the contemporary fine art world. • Contextual knowledge: Consider how fine art can inspire and be inspired by dominant discourses such as postcolonialism and feminism. • Reflect and review: Learn how to engage and critically reflect upon your own and other people’s work in order to develop a stronger and more informed artistic practice. • An ethical focus: Learn how to incorporate sustainable and ethical methods into your fine art practice. • Artistic licence: Express and explore your artistic, social and personal interests through your practical work and research.  • Collaboration: Attend lectures and collaborate on projects with students from Camberwell’s other fine art degrees including Computational Arts, Drawing, Painting, and Photography.  • Access to facilities: Use Camberwell’s large range of facilities including printmaking machines, photography and film studios and ceramics, wood and metal workshops. 

 Industry experience and opportunities • All our students have the opportunity and are supported in exhibiting their work to an external audience. Students can take part in a wide range of seminars and workshops hosted by a variety of professionals and external arts organisations. • Students will be able to take part in the College’s international exchange scheme to study abroad. • Third year students have the option to undertake a work placement, instead of a written dissertation or practical live project. Students and graduates can register with UAL Arts Temps, an employment agency, which offers students paid opportunities within the creative sector. Our south east London location is also home to a thriving arts scene. The area hosts a variety of galleries, project spaces and studios that our students, staff and graduates work and exhibit in. These include on-site gallery Camberwell Space, Work Form, Garudio Studiage and DKUK.
